*Socrates*

by MIA Andrea Ourgant Fernández

Socrates was a very doubtful person, he went around questioning the apparently obvious things and asking everyone he met to explain the most basic things.

Socrates thought that ideas already exist in our minds and that a skillful questioner brings to consciousness what we may not even realize we know.

He had a method of asking questions to pursuit the truth. This method is called The Socratic Dialectic. According to Socrates, to find out where you are ignorant is the first step in pursuing the knowledge or wisdom.

For example,
Imagine you have a super party this Friday, but you get punished and you are not allow to go out until the next week.
Is Friday night, party’s night! Your mother trusts you and tells you that she is going to go dinner with your father, and she is going to arrive late.

It is time when they go to dinner and you are very anxious. Finally you decide to go to the party so you get ready, realizing that your mother won’t notice it. You call a friend and he pick up you.
WOW! Is a mega party, everyone is having fun. It is 12 o clock, you think you must return home. So you ask for a ride. You arrive to your home, being quiet, put the stink cloth in the washing machine.

In the morning when you are taking your breakfast , your mother start asking you questions about what you did yesterday:

Mother: what did you do yesterday night? -I only watched TV
Mother: but the TV is broken, are you telling the truth? - Sorry , I get confuse, I got sleep all night.
Mother: I have a doubt, why is your formal clothes in the washing machine? -Because I mess them accidentally.
Mother: with what? -with soda
Mother: and why you were drinking soda? -A friend come to , I mean yes, but I heard him.
Mother: you went to the party right? -Ohm, yes, sorry.

This is a very useful method that you can apply whenever you want to know the truth and when you don’t trust in someone.

  1. Mia,
I really enjoyed your exmaple, it was very funny.
I think that it was very important the dialect, because of it, we now find the truth.
When a murderer tries to escape this is a great way to see trough his lies.

    Thanks, great job

  3. Mia,
I really enjoy your work because you used a common example that has at least happen to one of us. Also you applied it to persons like us, teenagers that are always looking for fun and that think they allready know everything about life, but the socratic method prove it wrong.

  4. Mia,
I really liked your example, because you applied a common situation to this theory and with it I was able to understand better the concepts. I also believe that it is true that this method can help you to find the truth, because with the questions you can discover the facts and the lies on a situation or a thought.

    great!!

It was a very good job. You can show us the use of the dialectia in a common situation. For me this method is very important and is the only way to get to the true, askin questions. With this question you get deeper into a topic or argument and you can find out if it's true or not.

  6. I do not really agree with Socrates when he says that we are born with innate ideas, but I do think that by questioning a person you can lead him or her to knowledge. You could guide with what you know so that the questioned person gets its own impresions.

  7. Mía,

Your example was very close to our reality with our parents. It was very funny and you really captured my attention.
Besides, it is very common that my mother knows when i'm lying and i never thought this was due to the dialetic method!

  8. Mia,
You are so right! Parents always do that. It seems like Socrates takes over their bodies. hahaha I usually ask a lot of Why? questions, and now i realize that its a step towards knowledge. Thanks for your words of wisdom.

  9. Mia,

Well, you write an excellent example. parents do that usually when they want to discover something. I think Socrates had similar thouhts with Descartes when he talked about innate ideas.

so ... I think you wrote an exellent commentary of socrates so congratulations...

    see yoou =)

  10. Hi Mia,
Fun example! Every persond, inside of her/him, knows exactly if he or she is thelling the truth or not, so Socrates dialetica can be a tool to obtain that information. But just make sure you DO realize that Socrates meant information, ideas that people were not aware they had.
