Plato like Socrates, believed most of us live in ignorance most of the time, but the worst of all is that we don´t even know we are just seeing a shadow of the real world.
In his dialogue Republic he show us the allegory of the cave, where the main point is that the visible world is the least knowable and the invisible world is the most intelligible. He says we must rely on our reason rather than in our senses, opinions or feelings.
An example for the cave allegory could be when you are about to do an exam, the teacher told you that he is going to put a math problem that you had already solved before. The day of the exam arrives, you see the problem but you don´t remember how to do it, so what Plato says is that you have to try to solve it (trusting on your reason) instead of putting what you barely remember, what you can see from your exam´s classmate or how others told you the math problem could be solved (trusting on your senses, opinions, etc.)

ResponderEliminarfunny picture, it seems like juanjo in a french exam jejeje (just kidding)
about plato i completley agree with his theory, we should rely more in our reason than in our senses. a good example of this could be the haunted houses. people enter to "supposly" to be haunted houses with the believ that there are gosths so their mind plays tricks on their senses and they see, feel and hear things that arent there.

Great example!!
ResponderEliminarAnd socrates theory is really interesting because it shows how ignorants we could be by influencing in what others said than in what you think; it's like giving up before trying and becoming an ignorant by your own will.

Dani,
ResponderEliminarI loved your post, it seems like you really thought about it. I like a lot what Plato says about the world and reality, I really like philosophers who rely on reason. With reason you can go further, you can be better, like in your example if you reason you might do better on your own.

Dani,
ResponderEliminarIt's true that we have to trust also our reasoning, because what happen if we have to solve a problem that doesn't involve your previous experience, or as plato said what if what we think is real it is not? I liked your example and the picture they are really clear.

Danielita!
ResponderEliminarI finally understood Plato thanks to your test example. I do think most people live in a cave because they are to lazy to look for knowledge. I dont always agree with plato because I think that sometimes we need to use our senses to understand something, not just our reasoning. Thanks for your words of wisdom!
